I lost count many many years ago of how many people I saw who didnt know how to use yellow box junctions correctly ! It really does seem like some people just make it up as they go along. Some people go in and wait, Some won't go in and wait, treating it like its DMZ zone, and then there are those who look like they are just doing the hokey cokey, sometimes in, sometimes out, wondering what its all about.

It really does make my saying “signs and lines add to the confusion”. come to the fore. You can see it some peoples faces aaaghhh a box junction ? Can I stop on it ?

The easiest way we teach box junctions is ask two questions !

“Where would I wait if I was turning right anywhere else ?

Answer “ Towards the middle, waiting to turn

What would a considerate driver do if the yellow markings weren’t there in the first place”

Answer – not block the traffic when the lights change.

What does the highway code say about box junctions !

“You MUST NOT enter the box until your exit road or lane is clear.
However, you may enter the box and wait when you want to turn right, and are only stopped from doing so by oncoming traffic, or by other vehicles waiting to turn right”

Box junctions really are that simple.

Hope this helps you understand box junctions a little more.
